This reporting differs rather widely from what has been reported in Austrian and German news outlets for the past few months. According to those reports, he really didn't find anything that was not already known, except a few buried relics. And no nuclear research facilities. Part of this tunnel system has been opened to the public, BTW. I'm not sure now, given this controversy (police involved), if it is still open.

Been waiting to here if it was finally open!

When making the journey to Mauthausen, most people overlook Gusen and St. Georgen. Both are steeped in [relatively unspoken] history, and are full of off-the-beaten-path sights. In 2010, when I was last there, one could still "sneak" into the complex - that is, if you weren't connected to the right people who could grant one access permissibly.

Hearing Geoff's words of the official opening, I feel as if I really must return - and see the tunnel system under [what I hope to be] much better lighting than I was able to generate on my own.

Geoff, that`s right. News in Germany talked about he opened an entrance Austria closed after inspection after the war with stones and earth. A lot of the inspections reports like CIOS, BIOS or something else are still not available for public use and marked as "restricted".

You're right, GABund - I read that what had been found was an entrance to some sort of underground room or otherwise, at the end of the current shooting club range in St. Georgen, that was the former SS rifle range (this is what was reported, I don't know if this is true or not). Most rifle ranges of the period had an underground facility at the end of the range for the target scorers to stay in a covered area. Sometimes these were elaborate concrete bunker-like constructions. I don't know if this is what they found in St. Georgen or not. It is some distance from the known "Bergkristall" tunnel entrances. Maybe this underground object was associated with those tunnels, maybe not. It will be fascinating to watch this story!

Geoff - Are you talking about the range North of the "Bergkristall" tunnel entrance - if I recall, it is off Lungitzer Strasse [or somewhere close by this street?] - is that the one? Looking at the photograph from the article, something rang a bell . . . and I think you may be right - that photo looks like something I recall seeing, when trying to find the SS shooting range. I can't say for certain - it's been a long time since we were there. If that isn't the location, you don't suppose it could be somewhere over by the "Kellerbau" tunnels, do you? That whole place is riddled with underground secrets, I think . . .

A new(er) video just turned up - that re-hashes some of the arguments about the St.Georgen/Gusen site:
