My recolleciton is that the original sign was stolen several years ago, but was recovered by law enforcement a short time later. After recovery, the original was put in a museum and a reproduction put up at Dachau. So, any recent theft would have been of the reproduction.Comment

Auschwitz gate was recovered after a few days, thieves went to prison as well as a swedish collector who paid for the theft.
Unbelievable what is going on in some persons mind...it's a shame.Comment

I was at Auschwitz in April. At that time, they told us that the gate sign was a repro, but that the recovered original was in storage.
The "Arbeit Macht Frei" sign in the gate at the Dachau Jourhaus entrance was not the original that was in place in 1945. Maybe some of the letters were the originals, but others were postwar replacements, and they were not in the same original positions. I have read that the original letters were stolen in the 50s or 60s. The gate was certainly the original, though.Comment
