war grave?
I see planes being dug up all the time, why not raise this uboat and re patriate the remains. Plus the historical benefits would be awesome.Comment

In my personal opinion, it is because there may be holes hidden in the underside of the hull or it might break apart while bringing it up, all safety standards not withstanding, and parts of the crew or parts of parts of the crew would be lost and that would be a big no-no.
I didn't see how deep in the water this one was but there is another in the Gulf of Mexico. it looks good but at 5000 feet, you're not going to go outside the submersible to double check anything, that is certain.
There are probably other considerations, such as the feelings of the families and how the Navy would feel about it. After 70 years, the unexploded munitions aboard many of these boats is unstable, to say the very least!
There's nothing down there that hasn't been detailed and documented on the U505. I think there are also subs that were captured and taken apart in Great Britain and Norway.

There's plenty of "Crew less" u boats sitting on the seabed off the north coast of Ireland,If i win the lottery one of them will be coming up soon

This is not about raising German dead vs US or anyone, more about what is a war grave? Like I say planes are unearthed regularly right? Ancient and not so ancient soldiers exhumed for study right? Where is the line drawn? Just throwing it out, Thoughts?Comment

Well, don't quote me, but I believe that the United Nations got an international law agreed to and passed, specifying that 'ships-of-war' that had been sunk at sea were classified as war graves and were not to be disturbed in any way.
I understand what you are saying about planes being unearthed from lakes and mud flats, et al, but those are in an individual country and I guess that that is what separates the one from the other.Comment
