I meant to post this on the 70th anniversary in August but I had a lot going on (in Mons for centenary of battle) and it slipped my mind . Basically a US Liberator crashed onto a school near where I was brought up, killing the crew, 38 children and others. I remember being told about it by my grandparents when I was a youngster in the 70's.

Events like this were absolutely dreadful in a small village, and tend to get forgotten amongst the infamous massacres and famous battles. These events must not be forgotten either.

That is so sad. My father was with the Eighth and his group was stationed in a small town by the name of Thetford. He has reminisced many times about the Christmas parties his group put on for the children there. More so than the dances that were held on the base the parties with the kids reminded the G.I.'s of their own home and families. When you consider just how well the locals took in and treated their Yankee cousins for the duration stories such as this are truly tragic.

Hi, just read this thread and noticed Thetford, I am based at RAF Honington , half way between Thetford and Bury St Edmunds, B17 and B24s were repaired here as well as P51s operating from here. John, well done mate, incidents like this will only be remembered by people who want to remember . RIP all those killed.
