Depending on how you go, you could come through Argentan and Falaise on your way to Caen. From Caen, you could visit all sorts of places. You could easily start by driving through Caen to Ouistriham where you could see Pegasus Bridge. From there you could take the D514 west and see sights such as:
Museum of the Atlantic Wall
Hillman Battery
Longues-sur-Mer Battery
D-Day Museum
Vierville-sur-Mer (Omaha Beach)
Point-du-Hoc
Grandcamp Maisy Battery
Hope that helps.

If you are into impressionist painters, visit Giverny. There is an interesting WW2 museum in Les Andelys on the Seine river. Here you can also visit Richard the Lionheart's castle (he was Norman after all). The drive along the Seine is quite nice, although towards Rouen things become more industrial.

Between Paris and the landing beaches, I recommand you : (In the order, from Paris to the Normandy, all 3 along the Seine)
- Try "http://museellgmdetosny.free.fr/uk/index.htm". I never visited it, but I was told this one was great.
- In Duclair, near Rouen you can find the museum "Aout 44, l'enfer sur la Seine", which is a very cool one to visit.

Call to be sure of the opening hours before you visit it, or try directly on your road ! The museum is located in a pretty castle, western from Duclair.
- Further in the West, there is this one :

Enjoy your trip !

Giverny is nicely along the way in Vernon, France.
I've found it's nice when coming from Paris to start at Caen, head north and then west to 'link-up' with the US operations.
If you have time after, Mont St. Michel and St. Malo just to the southwest are excellent places to visit (there's a great German fort in St. Malo that famously held out until the liberation of Paris).------------------------------------------------
Collector of French ww2-era insignia.
