A December Visit to the Ardennes

    Hello,

I am planning a trip to the Ardennes area in December of this year with a side trip to the Hürtgen Forest. I was wondering if anyone could provide me with any helpful information about the Ardennes and/or Hürtgen Forest area? Hotels, restaurants, places of interest, dos and don'ts, anything you think might be of help. Are there any websites that would be good to check out?

There is a small hotel in (of all places) Malmady that I stayed at and is first rate. When I was there it was only 1 of two in the town. (1970's) Tom

Be sure to check out the Tiger II in La Gleize, Belgium, as well as the huge American memorial at Marmasson just outside Bastogne. Foy, the town made famous in Band of Brothers, still has Easy company foxholes in the woods outside of town.

Be sure to have a dinner at Cafe Schumann (marked on maps below), both great food and historic place, that crossroad was one of the most fought for places during the BOB, cause of the height 490, just north-west of the crossroads. It changed hands many times (inside the restaurent is a painting of the Cafe after the battle).

In the woods just opposite the road there ae still many foxholes and impact craters to be seen, also a small memorial at the road to Wiltz.

At Wiltz itself is a small musuem in the castle, and 2 guns (88 PAK and 105 field gun just outside town), and a M4 Sherman tank.
In the surroundings, more guns and tanks on display.

If you need more info, let me know.

U have been in the Hurtgen forrest several times. Walk the famous kalltrail. And there is a special bunker trail you can follow. If you book your stay in the hotel below you are in the middle of the forrest and can start your walk from there. Truly amazing nature and history there!
