Through Hell for Hitler - Documentary

For the history and first hand account fans...

I recently became aware of this documentary/interview of Henry Metelmann also the author of two books ''Through Hell for Hitler'' and ''A Hitler Youth''.

If you can endure the first twenty minutes of political justification, the maker of the documentary finally leaves him alone to tell his war time memoirs.

For those who are interested in the life of a tank driver in Russia and never read the books, this is a gem.

    Enjoy,
    Tan

    About the Author:

Henry Friedrich Carl Metelmann, was born on 25 December 1922, the son of a socialist railway worker in Hamburg, Germany. As a lively and active boy, he joined the scouts, and later his group was merged with the Hitler youth. With Hitler's rise he was seduced by the fascist movement, and the experiences and privileges it bestowed

He fought with Von Paulus' Nazi 6th army at Stalingrad. Through experience he came to reject fascism and capitalist imperialism. He settled in Britain, becoming a communist, a railway worker, groundsman, writer and peace activist. He died on 24 July 2011.

Henry Metelmann was keen to talk about his experiences, especially to the young, and equated the invasion of the Soviet Union by an oil-hungry Nazi Germany with the Anglo-American assault on oil-rich Iraq in 2003. He remained a member of the Communist party of Great Britain until its break-up in 1991.

        Hi,

Thanks for posting the link and the video was interesting to watch in the entirety. I agree the first 15-20 minutes are little heavy on the Socialist agenda, however the story of his war time experience made it worth while. You can always skip through the first 15 minutes or so, but I think it is interesting to hear his point of view. Also, it was interesting to hear about his father and their impressions of the early years of the TR. Nothing he said made me think he was an idiot, just someone with a different political point of view. His viewpoint kind of reminded me of that of Herman Graf after the war. Both seemed to embrace the Socialist view and express regret for their wartime actions.

Both were unilateral, aggressive invasions with no legal mandate of sovereign territory for resources. If you choose not to see that you are an idiot yourself.

"....Illegal mandate? countless UN inspections ignored and terms of the gulf war violated tiime after time. Your revision of history is on a par with Stalin and Kim Jung.

According to U.S. President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair, the coalition mission was "to disarm Iraq of weapons of mass destruction, to end Saddam Hussein's support for terrorism, and to free the Iraqi people."

Well, there were no WMD, we've ignored every other country's support for terrorism (like Iran) and as for freeing the Iraqi people it caused at least 100,000 deaths, not to mention making us even bigger targets for terrorists and allowed the Taleban to reorganise in our absence.

The UN Security Council did not back it and the UN Sec Gen Kofi Annan said that it was illegal.

As for resources I'll just mention Cheney and Halliburton

I was part of 16 Air Assault Bde in those days and followed the political developments very closely at the time, it's funny how the chance of imminent death focuses your mind! I vividly remember crossing the International Border in the back of a Pinz Gauer in full IPE and thinking 'so this is what it feels like to unilaterally invade a sovereign territory!'

Anyhow, I know that you won't agree with me, but the whole 'Iraqi' thing was a massive f*** up IMO, cooked up and prosecuted by a couple of religious zealots. I mean, Blair is now the Middle East peace envoy, WTF, the hubris of the man knows no bounds!! He helped cause most of it!

                        Iraq etc

I never posted i supported the Iraq invasion and the outcome.... However i still await your claim we went in for oil..please post the facts and stats re that claim. I will now and forever take exception at any claim that equates the US led invasions in Iraq to the Nazi invasion of Russia. Thats a clean slap in the face of sanity and an absurd shot at the US, who has given so much in blood let alone material, to free so many . Now again, I will also not take to heart the words and opinion of an avowed Communist. Was your man a brave soldier? Most likely..., I cut him some slack for his extreme shifts and opinions, due to the incredible stress and horrific things he witnessed, I will not however agree with his politics.

Not clear as to your involvement during the campaign, but if you served , thanks, My Good friend received the Silver Star for actions in Dessert Storm. Bless all the troops.
