Hi Guys, I had some sad news yesterday with my last remaining relative who fought in WW2 has passed away after a month long illness. Always known to me as my Uncle Arthur (he was actually my Mum's cousin). He was 80 years old and served in the Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (REME) from 1942 to 1945. He served in Italy and fought at Salerno. He did not like to talk a great deal about the war, it was really something he wanted to forget about. But he did tell me how fightened he was and once during a German air raid he was driving his truck around a town and was too scared to stop. So he just kept going around and around. He gave me a few souvenirs of his, a German incendary bomb dropped in the raid on Nottingham in 1941 and two Arab style knives he picked up in North Africa. He became a vehicle fitter after the war in the mining industry. When I bought my Jeep he enjoyed showing me how to maintain it and he gave me some of his original tools.
Here he is (on the right) in a photo taken in 1945 in Italy with an unknown comrade.
Cheers, Ade.
