450 foot ship sunk by Raider Wolf found

SS Worcestershire: A forgotten shipwreck found

Recently the world commemorated the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. Five years after the Titanic disaster in 1917, a British armed merchant ship met its end in the Indian Ocean near Sri Lanka. The SS Worcestershire was en route from Rangoon to London when it was sunk by sea mines laid by German armed merchant raider SMS Wolf that was hunting British ships in the Indian Ocean at the height of World War 1.

A large mug is found among the debris with the inscription "Bibby Line"! To the avid Worcestershire obsessed, this is of overwhelming significance! Bibby LIne established in 1821 was the Owner of the SS. Worcetershire! No other Bibby Line Ship is known to have sunk off the shores of Sri Lanka.

very interesting read and photos of the wreck. Thanks for starting the thread.
Somebody, after all, had to make a start. What we wrote and said is also believed by many others. They just don't dare express themselves as we did. Quote - Sophie Scholl - White Rose resistance group

Wolf less well known than Atlantis, but if the link is anywhere near correct, it did sink or capture more vessels than did Atlantis, & only made 11 knots! Moewe at least did 14.

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMS_Wol...iliary_cruiser)

The Wolf destroyed 35 trading vessels and two war ships, altogether approximately 110,000 tons.

She served in the Baltic and was then given to the French as part of reparations after the war. Her name was changed to the liner Antinous, where she serviced sea routes around the Marquesas, Tahiti, New Caledonia, New Zealand and Australia.

In 1931, the former famous raider was broken up and scrapped in an Italian shipyard
