Warbirds P-51, rare comparison D to H model

Also covers Tall tail, & mechanical issues.

Deshay's short entry on the 14th shows why no P-51s were flying-they were all grounded. This was the result of a catastrophic failure of the 4 engine mount bolts on a 354th group P-51 over its base at Boxted-the entire engine assembly broke away and the pilot was killed. All P-51's where then given new bolts.

Norvin Bud Evans, ( P-51 pilot Kentcuky 1947),One of the problems of the Mustang was an occasional loss of Glycol coolant causing the Merlin to overheat. he then goes on & describes a flight of his where this happenned.

Mustang Mikes tall tail Mustang H. Steve Coutches; I always say, you drive the P-51 D, but you can fly a P-51 H. It weighs 1600 pounds less & you can take off with a full fuel load in 800-900 feet.

Tall tail... The vertical gained about 14 inches and about 2-3 feet of vertical surface area. The extra height/surface is helpful in certain flight regimes where the canopy can blank out most of the verticals effectiveness.

It is interesting the H model got the Tall tail as did late model 109, BF 209 II & TA 152. Spit 24 also as" tail-end" Charlie 1945-47.

The F Mk 24 was fitted with the large Spiteful-type tail
