A small memorial for a German fighter pilot - in Bulgaria

Last week was finished a small memorial to a German fighter pilot, who died in Bulgaria in 1944. Tomorrow will be "the grand opening".

Captain Gerhard Wengel was the commander of I/JG 5. Only a couple of days after his unit was relocated from Norway to the Vrazhdebna airfield near the Bulgarian capital Sofia, on 10 January 1944 he had to lead his men in a combat with heavy USAAF bomber and fighter formations, which attacked Sofia.
In this combat, defending the Bulgarian capital, captain Wengel was KIA in a fight with P38 fighters.
During the commie years even the dead Bulgarian fighters were not to be mentioned, so how about the German... But after the end of that period, his name appeared again and now at last was made this small memorial, small gratitude and rememberance from the citizens to the man, who gave his life defending theirs. The stone is in a nice city garden, a part of the city that can be considered central.

And a few shots from the "official" part today. The wide backs of some town/municipality chiefs, also the deputy military attachee of Germany. In the middle, facing the camera, is the main engine for the construction of that monument, the man who got the idea, drove it through the administrative jungle and paid everything himself! - my friend dipl. ing. Konstantin Ivanov. A remarkable man!!

The speech of an old pilot. Well, not a fighter, but still a WWII bomber. This man was born for speeches!!! /he is a politic figure after 1989, but now going towards retirement/.

A not high rank on the shoulder boards, but a face decoration big enough for a Feldmarschal!

That's for now, there were also aviation enthusiasts, usual park visitors and etc crowd, but that's not interesting. It is all ready now, next year the minicipality has promissed better grass around, well, we'll see...

Something like this in Belgium is unthinkable.

                      Well done Bulgarians

Thanks! But please direct all the bravo-s to my friend, ing. Ivanov, he is the one to create this, I was only his helper. The only helper, but still only helper

We are now developing a cunning plan to convert a memorial base seen nearby into a memorial to the Bulgarian fighters who were KIA, but this will be even more difficult /more $$ /. The municipality was kind enough to give us a big part of the nice garden for aviation memorials /3 possible places/, but this is not the end of the troubles, in fact it is only the beginning! But one important thing was finished today!!! One finished, one to go in the coming months, one for the future...

                              Theodor,

Thanks for the very interesting post. It is sadly ironic that Vienna is removing the memorial to Nowotny as we speak. Do other members have similar memorial "stories?" I have a few that I'll post later.
