    WW2 bomb explosion in Germany

Not unusual to find there, but this time the conflict from 70 years ago claimed life: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...near-Bonn.html

Damn, that was quite a blast. And sad to see that after so many years still lives are lost due to these bombs

Its only 8 km from my home ... I did not hear it as I worked in my cellar but several neighbours did hear the explosion.

Really sad story that, the unfortunate people took no part in the conflict, yet have had their lives taken away by such a thing, my condolences to the families involved, I mean that sincerely

On a lighter note, it’s a shame we couldn’t find one under the Big Brother House here in the UK !

          Hi,

          Same here in England!
Workmen commence on a new building project; work stops due to an unexploded bomb from the WW2 era.
Army bomb disposal units attend, bomb made inert - end of story.
Terrible for deaths to happen so many years later due to hostilities generations ago.

          Best wishes,

          John.

In a sad ironic manner the person was digging his own grave.

A lot of damage from a single bomb. Imagine what it was like when they dropped a thousand in a single night.

While we are on the subject and Ray posted that fantastic photo, what was Euskirchen's significance during the war and why did they bomb such a small town?

Looks like marshalling yards for rolling stock from the PI picture? There is some trench work or air raid trenches in the upper left, maybe a factory too?

Its very unfortunate but not the first time, and certainly wont be the last.

While in France not long ago, I watch a farmer ploughing a field on his tractor while two men with metal detectors checking the area in front of him.

Amusing to me when hobbyists try to decipher the this’ and that’s following a very real conflict. The politics will surly follow… It’s simply the remnants of what happened/s. And Ref, the fatality, better then a young child’s life…

Beside some industrial installations Euskirchen had some important railroad installations which were the main targets for the bombing.

Todays newspapaer states that the bomb had come from an unknown place as the yard were it exploded was a collecting point for debris from destructed buildings. Most possible the bomb was embedded in a concrete block - this should have been a method of "securing" bombs in the post war era when nobody was around who was able to disarm it. A guy leaving the place minutes before the explosion said that the dredge tried to desintegrate a large concrete block at this time. Most possible it was "only" a 250kg bomb. But as it was in the concrete and lay above ground level on top of a pile of rubble the explosion did much more demage as if it exploded into a pit...

Thats too bad sea mines used to wash up on our shores the army would blow them up, all the windows in the town would rattle and they'd be some damage but no injuries, sad.
