Ground battles in and around Schweinfurt...

    Hi,

I know there were some ground battles in and around the area of Schweinfurt, I read it was mostly the 88's positions. But I would love to know more... Places etc..

Thanks to anyone that can help me find out what happened.

    Regards

I’d suggest the locally published” Krieg in Franken” book, everything about the war in your area is there in…

Believe it was written by a hairdresser in Alb, Unter Franken.

          Hi James,

          Thanks for your reply...

Yes there are many things to see - a few weeks ago they opened up two bunkers - and a lecture was given on how they lived inside for hours during the raids.

Also a few weeks ago in the Rathaus was a neat display about the year 1943 and the flak men that were lost - they had tags, soldbucher, paperwork and many original photos.

It seems they are very open about WW2 around here - not like most of the other places I lived in Germany. Which is great when your interested in History!

The 88 positions have been hard to locate - most have been destroyed due to a new intersection just south of Hafen - I think it was 1996 when they built it. So looks like you where around at a good time!

I am specifically looking for recordings of battles just North of SW - Its not been very successful apart from a few random finds. Ahh well I must keep looking!

            Hi Chris,
My father was a H J flak helper in Schweinfurt. He was part of a Grossbatterie in Kaltenhof. It three batteries, two with six guns and one with eight. If you have a question you would like to ask him let me know.
He was in Schweinfurt on Feb. 24 1944. On Aug 17 1943 he was at a H J camp in Eltmann and saw the bombers just minutes after they hit Schweinfurt.

              Hitler Youth

My old mechanic, Gunter, was in the Hitler Youth in Schweinfurt when the Americans arrived.

Some great contacts you can find on WAF!

It would be interesting to know where the ground battles occured during the month of April North of Schweinfurt!

                Any info?
