    Airborne & Special Ops Museum

    Had the opportunity to go to the Airborne and Special Ops Museum last week. I was able to meet up with forum member Patrick and two more friends from the UK who came in for the MAX show early. We decided that Wed. to drive to Fayettville, NC and visit the museum. Travel time from Charlotte was about 2 hours 40 minutes. Admission was free.

    I thought the museum was very well laid out and had excellent exhibits. Well worth the drive. I think there are two other museums nearby at Ft. Bragg, the 82nd Airborne and JFK Special Ops musuem. So you can make a day of the visit.

    This is the lobby. The guy in the yellow is Al, a WWII airborne vet who is happy to talk about any of the displays and his service time.

    The parchutist in the first picture represents the first days of the airborne. This guy represent the modern forces. Sorry pic is sideways.

        The had a display setup on the war on terrorism. Included pics from Afghanistan and Iraq. This was a display of captured Iraqi items, including the infamous "Darth Vadar" Republican Guard helmet.

            After hitting the special exhibit on terrorism it was on to the main room. It is a walking tour of the history of the Airborne and Special Forces, that goes in chronological order. Attached in the map.

              Starts on with the creation of the first test platoon and talks about the influence of the German FJ.

                Closeup of tunic. Sorry but no flashes were allowed in the main hall so a lot of the pictures came out dark. Plus with a digital camera you have to hold rock steady or you get blurry photos.

                  From there you get the history of the 501st Parachute Battalion. Then it's on to a joint relief map of the world that shows all the Airborne and Special Forces (Rangers) actions in WWII. I was surprised how many were in the Pacific that I did not know about. After that it's up a ramp throught the body of a C-47 were you can really feel how uncomforrtable those seats were. Then it's on the North Africa. Got a nice tropical tunic.

                          From there it is over to Italy 1943. Got a nice light machine gun on display.

                              From there it is onto D-Day, with a quick side trip about the Jedburgh operations in France. We then have a full size C-47 flying over. Complete with swirling spotlights and the sound of gunfire and engines.
