Spanhoe airfield - May 2005 VE weekend

I'd just like to let any WW2 Re-enactors or Living History people know that there's an event being planned for VE weekend (May 7th and 8th 2005) at the former Spanhoe airfield in Northamptonshire England. (About 10 miles west of Peterborough)

Spanhoe was home to the American 315 Transport Carrier Group at the time of D-Day and Market-Garden. Thus, the old airfield carriers quite a of history with it from WW2.
There are planned to be quite a few events, and if anybody is interested in either coming along for the weekend either as re-enactors, trade stalls, or associated, could they please check out www.operationspanhoe.co.uk and get in touch via the organisers on the website.

    Many thanks ..

    Gary J.

I live right near to there ! Kettering in fact, it would be worth paying your respect's at Grafton Underwood too. The first and last bomb's of the Eighth were dropped from there and there are many, bunkers, blast shelters, air raid shelters etc etc to see there along with other buildings (there's even some toilets left there still)

I'll pop along for sure, a long way off yet though.

In fact I'll be walking the dog there tonight

        Spanhoe

The reason for the early "publicity", is that VE day 2005 being the 60th will mean many people will have plans or be planning early.

If you keep an eye on the website (operationspanhoe.co.uk), there will be more being added as things progress.

I believe already, that there's a Glenn Miller type band booker for the Saturday night, who will be playing in one of the small hangers still standing.
Also, another hanger is going to be used for militaria collection displays ..

There will be militaria trade stalls, as well as military vehicles, and of course re-enactors ... (There's a great area which looks like it's been bombed out, which I believe is being turned over to the re-enactors to do their thing in).

        ..Please spread the word ....

        Regards

        Gary

I should add that I will be putting on a display in the "museum" (A hanger has been turned over for WW2 exhibits). So if any of the forum members are attending, please drop by and say hello !!

This looks like being a great event, but as Gary already knows I will be doing the XXI Indep Parachute Coy Reunion the same weekend, so I cannot make this one.

                Cheers, Ade.
