    Trip to Germany Suggestions

I'm heading to Germany at the end of the month for a 10 day Rugby tour with our local club. Hopefully there will be some time for site seeing. I'm interested in any WW1 or WW2 related historical areas, museums, memorials, cemeteries etc. The trip takes us to:

    Hannover

    Heidelberg

    Munich

    Ingolstadt

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Ruins of the Reich

May I suggest viewing the website Ruins of the Reich by Geoff Walden. All of your planed cities have several great places to see....etc. Munich - Feldherrenhalle & Hofbrauhaus to name just a couple. Please check out the site & have a wonderful trip ! Tom

The correct name is "Third Reich in Ruins" - Geoff Walden

been over there several times, make sure to go to Berchtesgaden and Eagles Nest, Dachau and Nurnberg to see the Zepp Platz, Congress Hall, Ehren Hall and all thats around there. You can jump on a rail tram right in front of the Congress Hall and ride it all thru Nurnberg and will return you right back again.

          Hi Steve,

Hope you enjoy your trip to Germany!
Your best bet for "World Wars" sightseeing is Munich.
From your list of four venues, I have been to Hanover, and very little of interest is there; the other two locations I have not been to.
Munich is the best place of interest for a militaria/history enthusiast.
The Feldherrenhalle, an organised "Third Reich" tour which begins at the rathaus; this lasts for approximately three hours on foot taking in the Hofbrauhaus and many other sites.
Dachau KZ is just a short train journey away, and a connecting bus service takes you directly to the camp.
To look around the camp takes several hours, and as you are in the south of Germany; the temperature may be rather warm!

          Very best wishes,

          John.

Wow! Some great ideas here already. Much thanks! Hopefully I can see some of this. I'll do some more research based on these tips. I hear there is a military cemetery in Heildelberg.

We have Dachau included in our plans for the whole team, so that should be interesting.

                Steve,

I don't know how much time you will have but you are certianly travelling some distance, it would be a shame not to make the best of it.

To get to the tank museum at Munster you could travel through Belsen and visit there.

If you get some time in Hannover drop a PM and perhaps I can organise a vist to an amazing private collection there. the guy is very knowlegable and a perfect gentelman.

There is also the Celle Garnnison Museum Hohne and Fallinbostel Museums too, again this could be put in on route to Munster but it (Celle) is only open Wednesday PM and Saturday PM the other two would require liason.

Enjoy your tour and goodluck with the games!

                Jock

                    Hello Steve.
                    Welcome to Europe.
Maybe you can visite the Panzermuseum in Münster.
The city of Münster is located in the Northern part of the state of Nordrhein -Westfalen, more or less near Dordmund, Osnabrück and Hannover.
(Not that far away from Hannover .......to Canadian standards...)
                    Enjoy your stay.
                    Cheers
                    Tony

                      Steve,

From my bro's Third Reich in Ruins site; info/photos of the Heidelberg Thingstätte as Patrick mentioned (scroll down to about the middle of the page). This place is pretty impressive. http://www.thirdreichruins.com/misc_...htm#Heidelberg

The Googlemaps excerpt shows where the military cemetery is (I didn't see it on Third Reich in Ruins), on the hill above the city (Heidelberg); right in the middle of the view where it says Ehrenfriedhof. It has WWI and WWII graves. But, both the Ehrenfriedhof and the Thingstätte can only be gotten to by some winding and maybe confusing drives up in the hills; it's not like they're near downtown Heidelberg. I was once stationed in Heidelberg, and before our car came in we decided to take a "walk" up to the Ehrenfriedhof ... more like a climb!

                      Best,
                      Greg

PS - the Heidelberg Thingstätte is on the other side of the Neckar River from the city and Heidelberg Castle, close to the top of this view where the label says Heiligenberganlage. A little harder to get to.

                        Best,

                          Steve,

Ran into my pal at the market on Saturday, he would be happy to host you round his collection.

From the center of Hannover he 15 minutes away closer if your hotel is in the North.

                          Regards

                            Panzer Museum

                            Hi Steve
Go to the Panzer Museum if you can I was there a few years back and I know you would love it. The rail system is great and you can get there easy from Hannover. The museum is in walking distance from the train station great beer too.
Nice little restaurant across the street from the museum also

When you are in Berlin, maybe you can try to locate "Deep Digger Dan" and let him give you a guided tour of his favorite woods:

                              http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzKMUqW5lb0

I find his videos disturbingly entertaining; a bit like watching a real life Ernest P. Worrell hunting for relics.

Bang Bang Bang Bang Bang Bang... Cumon! Get In!
