    USS Intrepid Museum

Recently returned from NY trip. While I was there I got a chance to go to the USS Intrepid Musuem.

The Intrepid is a WWII aircraft carrier commissioned in 43. She served until 74 and was turned into a musuem in 82. The musuem houses an assortment of naval history displays, aircrafts, vehicles, and naval ships.

Cost is $14.95 for adults. I made it through the whole musuem in about 3 hours. I was a little disappointed in the quality as the musuem has the ability to be much more. They spent a lot of money on high tech interactive terminals for some displays but seems to spend little money on upkeep of the aircraft. Also the aircraft were poorly displayed. They have a Blackbird but you can only see the back of it, you can't get up toward the front. Skip the current movie in the theater as it is just a navy recruiting film. Supposedly they are getting a new one soon that will go over the history of the ship.

Not a whole lot of focus on the ships WWII service. A few models and displays but not a lot about campaigns or battles.

All in all, a good diversion if you are in town and looking to kill a couple hours but nothing I would make a special trip for.

This was the original Iwo Jima statue that stood in front of the Navy Building in Washing DC until it was replaced with the current one at Arlington.

The "Score Card". All the Rising Suns on the upper part are planes destroyed in air to air. The row at the bottom are planes destoyed by AA. The right hand side is a list of ships sunk by the planes from the carrier.

The carrier served as the primary recovery platform for the NASA space capsules so they have a small display area about them.
