        Sidenote

        Our family friend was in that camp after the incident. he was a navigator on a b-17. He started the first POW newspaper. He related to us , the Luftwaffe erected a monument to the slain escapees. A far cry from their Gestapo counterparts.

          The memorial was actually designed and errected by RAF POW's from the Northern Compound at Stalag Luft III. The former POW's held in Stalag Luft III whom I have spoken to said the Luftwaffe personnel felt a great deal of shame for the murder of the 50 escapees, and encouraged the memorial.

            Further to the link at the start of this thread, for anyone interested in the investigation to bring the murderers of the escapees to justice would do well to read "Exemplary Justice' by Allen Andrews, a fascinating read.
