So easy for all the armchair PC Quarterbacks of today to discuss the actions of people 70 years ago or their relatives today.

The German War Graves Commission--Deutsche Kriegsgraeberfuersorge--based in Kassel, Germany, has been locating and burying German war dead in foreign lands since WW 1 and continues that work today. Agreements have to be reached with any country before any work may begin and that means that before the "wall" fell in 1989 nothing could be done in most East European countries, particularly the former Soviet Union. They rely on private contributions for the most part and STRESS peace between former enemies and a worthy burial site for any and all war dead. They provide a grave registry and also organize trips to various countries family to visit the graves of fallen relatives. The equipment of war does not interest them, the dog tag --Erkennungsmarke-- is the most certain way of identifying the dead and they do not want to see these disturbed. So any time you see a German dog tag that has pitting on it and appears ground-dug you possibly see a soldier's remains forever unidentified. Of course some were simply lost, thrown away, etc. but many likely come from digging up the dead. I donate to the Commission yearly as this is the cold reality of the horrible conflicts and an excellent warning and admonishment for collectors like us who enjoy the trappings and souvenirs of the unimagineable worst human activity. The Commission also issues a quarterly magazine about their work. Unfortunately it is only in German as far as I know. You can google the Commission and make donations online.

You have to understand how the Russains view the German Invaders of their homeland ... How would you feel about a graveyard full of soldiers that burned your farm , raped your daughters , hanged your sons ans shipped your wife off to a forced laber camp , never to be seen again ? I dont blame them for not honoring enemy graves . If I were an old Russain farmer I would let them rot in the hell that they brought with them to my land .
My Grandfather was a German soldier that served on the Russain front from 1941 to 1943 , one story he told me was that he and his troop commandered a Russain farmhouse during a cold winter night in 1942 . Some of the soldiers took the Russain farmer and his sons outside and shot them . The wife and daughter were raped numerous times and when my Grandfathers Comerades were finished , they took the women outside and shot them also .
So when you people call some of us "arm chair generals "or say that "what we say about sums it up of who we are " ... You really have no clue of what real war is and how it effects individuals in the long run . My information was first hand from my Grandfather . For myself I am a US Marine veteran , I dont talk about my personal experances .

I guess the people which are relic hunting are not WWII veterans and are thinking a bit different then you, otherwise i would have also thrown all
remains from russian soldiers in the trash.

Wow "Salzberg" doesnt take much to judge , huh ? I would hope that you never have to deal with someone that wants to rid you of yourself . How about asking a true combat veteran what keeps himself going in war , being absolutley exhausted ; yet he still goes on ... Its "HATE" that keeps the Front Liner fighting , Its "HATE" that wants "PAYBACK" that keeps the soldier motivated to go on . Ask I real combat veteran to tell you his darkest recollections ... If they care to tell you , I can guarentee people like yourself will loose sleep as you cannot deal with how offended you are . My Grandfather still hated the Russains to the day he died in the mid 70s , he told me once that he did not kill enough of them.
Now go back to your "ARMCHAIR" General , and judge away .

I have heard it is happening in Germany, Baltic states, Poland...
There are also diggers who are legal and every corpse found are reburied to German and Russian soldier graveyards. But anyone who did that in pic is criminal and should be in Russian jail for this

I bought an Iron Cross first class and a silver wound badge from the veteran who took it off the German soldier in the Tank in North Africa. His mate took his Tank Battle badge and wristwatch....what part off immorality does that come under?Grave robbing has gone on for centuries and bodies have been dug up in the last 50 years to make way for new motorways and housing. There is a demand for ground dug items and a large collectors market for it. I have a few pieces and the curiosity and the fact thats its witnessed history is the appeal irrespective of the items condition.
If you want to be really moral no one should collect any off these items that represent evil of the Nazi regime. You can't just go around saying its ok to collect documents but not ok to collect ground dug items. If general members off the public decided that documents bearing a swastika were immoral would you stop collecting? what would be your defence?
You are never going to stop people digging up graves no matter what you do. I know a veteran who has a German helmet that he took off a soldier he killed. I will go one further! he became a police officer after the war and officers used to wear the helmet for a joke if they got a promotion! that helmet came directly of a dead soldier....is that disrespectful?

The war is over, no one really hates the old enemies anymore and we are all friends on here. We collect what we want because we do. I have a nice collection off daggers and badges....I also have an original Zyklon B cannister.....does that make me sick? its an item off history. It killed people along with the Butterfly Bomb I have and the Russian PPSH.

Reading some off the replies on here I wonder why people collect in the first place.

Actually its a sense of honor, duty, discipline and responsibility that makes a Soldier continue when they are exhausted physically and overwhelmed emotionally. Hate doesnt even keep you warm at night.

I think this thread has reached it's limit.
