I have always found this subject quite interesting, especially given the Japanese Soldiers still living on islands well into the 80s still fighting WW2. In "Yugoslavia" there was still fighting well after may 1945 in some places, into the 50s although it became more like Banditry. Many were hiding a long time and still being taken care of by villages. Remember any Balkans war is not black and white and I should imagine other countries were the same where there was no real chance to surrender fairly, or if they wanted to surrender at all. A "pocket" of resistance of approx 1500 in Istra was "wiped out" some time in 1947 or 48 apparently? I have heard this may have been the remains of the Black Legion and other forces including Germans, Cossacks and Cetnicks (who had not switched over like the rest) that banded together. Its also stated by people who survived the Bleiburg marches that the Black legion was seen to escape at some point, so there may be some truth as to them being in this 1500 who continued fighting. I will try and find out more, the interesting thing is that this location is still apparently not really known to the public where it actually happened and that documents of the day even kept it vague and are still not really available to the general public, who knows! Then you had actions in the 1970 Croatian spring era by outside groups directly linked to the NDH to attempt to start a civil war.

Imagine a connection that stayed on and grew during 50 year, which ended with independence for the NDH - which would be todays Croatia. Apparently the longing after a free state, just grewed stronger.
Anyway, not to get focused to much on the balkans, nor trying to convert this to a thread about the civil war. But I think its soon time, to buy a croatian SS-sleeve.

The Balkans is a very polarized place during wars, and in general. Winston Churchill was not wrong....but, as anybody with a grain of sense can see any form of Political extremism is bad and most "well-centered" people and veterans who i have met who survived various wars, crisis and conflicts always say that! There were a lot of agendas going on in the last war, and some people may have "idealized" with WW2 emotionally to one side or the other but the last war was not about WW2.

I Know many do not want to read a lot here, but if you read the link I added above ,it spans over 530 pages of very interesting non fiction information as to what happened when the guns stopped firing to women , ex ss men, public terrors, and these real stories sewn together many Germans are unaware happened. I strongly urge all who read this thread to take the time to read it over the next week, as it is too long for most to read at one time. If you hit a blank page just keep scrolling down till the next page cursors up. Some peoples names that may be realtives of collectors here may pop up, and there is much about towns by name and post war situations with specific citizens names, and even what happened to the grave of hindenburg, and the theft of famous German military officers of history who were dug up, and their awards stolen. (still at large today). Foreigners who do not speak english may find it difficult unless they have a program to interpret from english to their specific language, but I assure you if you take time to read it, you will find it not boring,but enlightening , sad, and also unpredictible, and help collectors here realize the impact on so many lives , collecting what we collect will never be looked at so lightly in the future by those who are unaware the full impact it caused even to this day .

This thread is becoming, thanking all of you, more interesting than supposed due i really feel that there are so many "hidden" stories after the May 8th 1945....
The provided link book of Juoneen is absolutely great, easy to read and very very interesting. I think too that many fights after that date were only pretext for bandits but, at the very same time, we must think which was the economical and living situation in Europe in that period. In some places the condition was close to starvation.Comment

I have been into it many years back with a forum owner who simply "could not/would not" accept that in War alot of things go on, and not necessarily on the "bad" side only, in fact the allied side also was not blameless. There was a book in the UK about to be published about allied "war crimes" and the like, which was apparently strongly resisted. I did not have the reference for it at the time as I had only read about it, and all the righteous people on this forum just descended on me! Like I did something wrong! That is quite sad actually, and a sad trend where we see modern day people looking at history with interest but "from the now (ideologically)" and not the"then". With that We loose 99% of the truth, or getting close to the (sometimes very ugly) truth then.....at least what I think. Nobody is here to throw dirt on our veterans, i'm sure of that!
Modern day society is I think programmed by "buzz words"....you say something about a subject like this equals: you are an "apologist"....and you must be the "N" word too! (Insert scandal and profiling).
He collects German uniforms: He is a "N" word....(Insert scandal and profiling).
He collects British medals: So what.......wheres the coffee machine? (Insert story about boring work colleague who collects medals, stamps and Pez dispensers)

Bcking up to this thread, I had curiosity since long time to improve my knowledge about this argument but I always forgot to start or ask about it. Some days ago I was really astonished talking with the son of a friend of mine who told me that at his high school, the history of the second world war ends totally at May 8th 1945 and there is no trace about what's happened (also politically speaking) in Europe after that date. I find it incredible due if we live nowadays so it's only for our past that must be known really at 360 degrees.
I think too that many documents have been destroyed or lost and I think too that , rightly, people after the war wanted to forget all...Comment
