    How to "Age" a uniform

Hey guys, I have M40 trop tunic from Hessan and would like to "age" it. I know the best way is to wear it as I've done with all other reenactment gear and uniforms. But I need to get this looking worn for MTO event coming up soon. Any tips or tricks?

In all seriousness maybe a few hours left on a fake suntanning studio bed might get the item into a more user-faded state. The tanning studio might think it odd you wanting to leave just a jacket on the bed, but it may work. I dont know. Just a suggestion.

Try repetitive low crawling and washing.

Hit the edges and the seams with a belt sander. Don't overdo it, a little goes a long way. If you can, take it to the beach and let it soak in the sea and then dry on the sand. The salt water will help oxidize the thread and fabric. Then leave it hanging in the sun as much as possible.

Take an electric razor to the areas of normal wear, around the collar, elbow area and cuffs to take the fuzz off and get down to the nap.
Wash it a few times, let it dry in the sun.
Mix a combination of olive oil, soot, and dust then apply it around the collar, elbow area and cuff ends to simulate grime.

Lots of good ideas. You could make some good mud and stomp it around in it. Then hose it off and let dry. Then shake out the left overs.

                Just wear it .....
Or give it half a dozen low washes or if you wish to make sure roll around in some wet mud puddles.
It will age with time as it did with the combat uniforms issued at the time.
                They weren't aged before wear
There is nothing wrong with wearing a new piece of kit on the day ....
                Regards

All great ideas I've always just worn my new gear to events and over the years my uniforms and field gear are in perfectly worn in. Just trying to speed that process up for a upcoming event. I've started the process. Washing, roll in some dirt while wet, low crawled....as best I could for a forty something

another idea that might actually work, although i cant verify this, is to pay an alpha tramp to wear it 'around' for three or four weeks. minus insignia, id say. you'd then pay him ON RETURN of the jacket. insignia sewn back on, it can then be lightly washed (cold water) to remove 'organic debris' before being actually worn, insignia remounted, at your next event. if you cant find a sunbed, (ref my first idea), send the jacket to a friend who lives in a very hot place, and ask them to leave the thing hanging in their yard for a while/(and/or local tramp usage, see first idea).

Got plenty of them hanging around Downtown. Don't think I would want it back.
Actually I've washed in cold water a couple times then knocked it around in the dirt while wet, dried it in the sun then used a 100 grit sponge (painting prep sanding sponge) and lightly ran it over the high wear areas and over all the tunic. It's taken on a nice wear appearance that I was trying to achieve. When I get insignia on I'll post some pics.

drop or spray randomly sulfuric acid here and there, put it in a strong tea/coffee solution, throw it in the washing machine with rusted iron and then let it lay outside somewhere for a month or two with a small bit or two of rusted iron folded inside - small flakes of rust work best. Repeat all of the above as many times as required to obtain the desired appearance.

That is the technique used by the great swindler Jim Calhoun back in the day when he was peddeling his fakes in Schweinfurt Germany.
