P40 Kittyhawk aircraft found intact from WW2 in Sahara

A P40 Kittyhawk fighter has been found pretty much intact where it belly landed in the Sahara desert in Egypt. Talk about a time-capsule, I just hope it is properly recovered.

Looks like it crashed on the moon! Simply amazing how things are preserved in the desert. I can imagine it spent alot of time buried under a dune which has since blown away.

I wonder what happened to the pilot? If he was rescued or whether his bones are now lying bleached somewhere in the desert (r.i.p.)?

what hostile environment to be left in.

i guess with the planes records being filed somewhere it is only a matter of time until the fate of the pilot is discovered

The anorak brigade are discussing it and researching it on the flypast forum, the impression I've got is he tried to walk out and didn't make it, tragic.
I'm not sure exactly where it is and how far from help or lines the site is.

Anyone here know the story of the American B-24 named "Lady be Good"? She went down in the Libyan desert in '43. The crew bailed out, met up and attemped to "walk out". They lasted nine days. Their diary was found describing their ordeal.

Yes PBS did a really good documentary on it last year. Quite remarkable. Detailed the flight out of Bengazi and the ill-fated return. Also covered the re-discovery and restoration. Plane was in very good shape still after all these years. Tragic about the crew, including the one fellow that had his parachute not open and he plunged to earth....

The P40 is an outstanding story.
