Hallo Kameraden! This past Monday(March 26, 2012) I had the privalege of given a lecture on "U-Boats in the Gulf" to a full meeting room of mostly "Winter Texans" at the Maritime Museum in Rockport, Texas.
The talk began at noon and was to be 45 minutes in length then have 15 minutes of questions. At 2pm the last folks were leaving, they asked questions for over 45 minutes(Thank God I knew most of the answers). My talk focused on the link between U-171 abnd U-166 and the sinking of the Mexican freighter, the Oaxaca by the U-171 in late 1942. It was sunk not 30-40 minutes from the museum and is in shallow water(65ft)...it's cargo of 250lb rubber bales still occasionally washes up on shore in the area.
What follows are some images of the talk and display I presented.
If anyone does a Kriegsmarine impression, U-Boat or otherwise, and would like to form a living history group(nothing REAL formal) in the Texas/Ark/OK/LA area, please contact me. Believe me people are very interested in this aspect of WW2 German history. The reaction and enthusiasm of the crowd was amazing and energizing, and the Gulf Region is a place where, in North America, Kriegsmarine Sailors actually were.
Enjoy!
