    slick shaft

    Gentlemen, my brother in law recently passed away at 94; Karl served in the Wehrmacht Eastern front from 40 till the end; have his boots, they are patched one has 6 patches, the other 5 and cracked but they carried him nearly to the river Don, still with hob nails and heel steel surround; just wondering why I never asked him how did he get that effect of black on a brown base and how did he get the shaft so smooth and slick compared to the rest of the boot; he was an awesome friend, more like an older brother to me,the pity is even though we talked about many things I never asked about these things and got his boots cause they were way to small for his children and grands; just curious on how he got the shaft so shiny, stiff and slick with black over brown; any ideas appreciated;

        spit shine; no problem but he told me they were issued to him in a brown color and they had to make them black, could kick myself for not asking how; just kinda wondering on that one cause when I have tried to turn a pair of brown shoes into black after dropping india ink on them, they never did turn black, eventually had to "paint them"...........
