I have just returned from a short trip to Ypres. I thought I would visit some of the Yser sector including the Trench of death at Dixmuide and the Vladslo German Cemetery. I was a bit disappointed getting to the trench of death as it was closed. But I managed to take a few photos of the site and the Vladslo cemetery famous for its sculptures of the greiving parents.

Hoogelege German Cemetery

I have not visited this one before but found it under renovation. The authorities are spending over 250,000 Euros and work was going on so i couldn`t visit it properly.

Interesting headstone

Hi

What is the story behind this site and all the cement sand bags? To me it looks like a site that was reconstructed as a tourist attraction in the 1920's, as everything is perfectly lined up and undamaged.
Any thoughts on this?

Jean Loup, it is very similar to the trenches at Vimy. They reconstructed it with concrete sandbags as a permanent memorial to their fallen. I went there first over 20 years ago and it was just open to the public 24/7. I think the Belgians are making more of their war time efforts. The peace tower in Dixmuide is very impressive. They certainly have made great efforts around the salient with the Bayernwald trench system at Croonaert which has been authentically reconstructed
