The Quote "Send Us More Japs"

To settle a discussion, can anyone tell me if the quote "Send Us More Japs" was real or a myth?
I was once told that it is acredited to a Marine Company Commander on an island in the PTO after he was turned down for armor support, artillery support, air support, reenforcements, and resupply of food, water and ammo he was asked if he needed anything else and he replied sarcastically "Yeah, send us more Japs."
I haven't been able to find a source to confirm this story one way or another. Can anyone shed light on this?

It was a myth. Commander Cunningham had a message transmitted in 1941 from Wake Island that read: "SEND US STOP NOW IS THE TIME FOR ALL GOOD MEN TO COME TO THE AID OF THEIR PARTY STOP CUNNINGHAM MORE JAPS..."

Someone in Honolulu seized upon the opening and closing words of the padding, and a propaganda legend was born. Source: Duane Schultz's "Wake Island The Heroic Gallant Fight".

You can find more info on the myth in any or most Wake Island books.

    Cheers, Eric

It was also a line in the movie "Air Force".
