About 6 months ago I realized that my parents only live an hour outside of Toccoa and hastily did the research for a day trip to see the museum in Toccoa and Currahee.
Over Thanksgiving break I was able to drive up with my brother and run the mountain before visiting the museum. I'd been progressively training the last couple of months with 2-3 mile runs, which really didnt prepare me for the last mile of sheer mountain running. The first 2 miles from the original camp location are up and down hills but the last mile is INTENSE!
Unfortunately there isnt much left of the actual camp today.
The museum is absolutely a MUST see. I was really impressed with all the material they have from firearms to 101st memorabilia. The docent/tour guide we met has been living on the same family estate since they purchased it in the 1790s and knew the history in and out. He even gave plenty of anectdotes about visiting veterans, filming of BOB, etc. It was really great! They also have a barn that housed members of Easy company after Normandy. In the move they found all kinds of artifacts in the barn walls from well-known names in the company!
Here are a couple pictures!
