This museum is pretty cool lots of american tanks and even a few German vehicles (stug, halftrack and an 88) Inside they have alot of uniforms and weapons so as soon as my camera gets here ill take tons of photos.
All the vehicles etc.. were taken from .

Which base is the actual 1st Ad museum on?

I went to the small museum in Baumholder, and my friend manages
the one in Friedberg as an additional duty. I always wondered if there
was a larger one at Div HQ.

            Darn,

I spent two years in in "Old Ironsides" and never even thought about a museum. Please do show us pictures as I would love to see them. I missed out on a lot of stuff while there as I spent too much time in the field.
16th Engr Bn Kasern (?) were built in 1916 and supposedly were used by the Imperial Army and then by SS units in WW2. Not sure how true this is. I never researched anyof these claims. I do know that there are underground passeges to other Kaserns (Spelling?).

            16th Combat Engineer Bn. Based a Fuerth/Nuernburg.

Please, if anyone is near the area would they take pictures and let me know what is at this location these days?

Much of that stuff was transferred from the 3AD Division Museum including Dan "Crockadile" Peterson the curator when it was moved from Frankfurt due to the drawdown and VII Corps going away. Of course there have been many more additions...due to two Wars in the Persian Gulf. The Hetzer was found on the Training grounds of Grafenwoehr and restored...Our Historical group got to use it in a reenactment at Hohenfels, along with a Sherman from Sinsheim Auto Technik Museum and a 88 Flak gun borrowed from Richard Eiermann who was the curator for the Military side of Sinsheim Auto Technik museum at the time. Got to spend some time on the "Rock" myself with the 1-13th Inf and then later the 3-12th at Baumholder so I got to see the museum in it's infancy. Bill

                  CCJ,

Fuerth/Nuernberg has been closed for quite a few years now...nothing open in that area any longer...except Grafenwoehr/Vilseck/Hohenfels/Bamberg and the Army Air Field off Autobahn 6 I believe is Katterbach? Maybe some of our German members can take some snaps of what remains of some of the Kasernes in and around Fuerth/Nuernberg. I worked at 100th ASG in Grafenwoehr 1999-2001 which is one reason I know a little about the area. Bill

Grafenwoehr... I have been there TOO many times.

I do hope somebody can go by there sometime. Hopefully the buildings of the Kaserne are still there.

                      CCJ,

I wouldn't get your hopes up on seeing remaining kasernes....I visited quite a few during my military time and much later after retirement I revisted many of them only to find out they have been demolished. Berlin, Bertchesgaden, Heilbronn, Mainz, Stuttgart are good examples...many of the old German Kasernes occupied all those years by US Forces and turned back over the the German Government are now being taken down to make room for new housing or businesses. The day is coming when not much will be left. I know the majority of the US forces in Germany will be leaving in the near future. EUCOM Commander stated only Ramstein, Stuttgart and Grafenwoehr will be remaining. It's a different world now. Maybe there will be a few museums to show that we were even there!!! Just like Checkpoint Charlie Berlin....which is not even historically at the right location. Bill

When I was a private, my first assignment was Goppingen in 1989.I went back a couple of years ago to see it and it is like refugee housing for the easterners. There is still a "Big Red One" on the gate and our motto "Danger Forward". After all these years, nobody touched it.

                          Hey Petz,
I was in 4-12 from 93 until 98. Of course, they changed the designation to 2-6 somewhere around 95. Baumholder was rough because we didn't even have a train station, had to gat a cab to Heimbach!!

                            Herr R.,

Small world...I was in Baumholder from 1987 to 1990. Yep not much to do except go downtown to Rosie's....then there was numerous visits to Grafenwoehr and Hohenfels even though we had a training area in our own backyard!!! . I remember you guys had a partnership unit...the Luxembourg Army...Every year there was a "Rememberence Day Parade" in Ettelbrueck...it took only one visit to become attached to that small country with such friendly people surrounded by France, Belgium and Germany. They sure do love and appreciate Americans for liberating their country in September 1944. I have friends there for life...two of which will be visiting me next week in Corpus Christi, Texas!! Bill
