British defense walls/former bunkers round Reykjavic

These walls, steps, and blasted-rock depressions (with downtown Reykjavík in the backround) are the only remnants at Öskjuhlið of the WWII British fortification that once protected Iceland from hostile takeover by the dreaded Nazis. I'm told cannons once lined the upper edges of these now roofless bunkers, aimed at the seaway leading to Reykjavík harbor. I don't know enough about the history of this spot, unfortunately...all I know is that it's great fun clambering among the ruins, especially with three spunky girls in tow. .

    They

Those defences look to be older than WW2 ... possibly reused and refortified.

For comparisons of standard British defence structures, take a look at this web page, and see if anything matches up ..

Well that is entirely possible. I'll have to visit it & ask locals about it.

The ports would be priority # 1 for Iceland, followed by the flat landing grounds at Mergerdi & Sandkeid where the Glider activity was in the 30's & still is for that matter. I dunno specifically where these walls are,( outskirts of Reykjavic I know, but whether they face the sea or what is what I mean), but an interesting visit & subject to bring up there it would be.

Heimay & Bakki airstrips in south Iceland, ( Bakki built in a potato field by a farmer & a pilot), for those with an interest in Iceland WW 2 timeframe, operation Ikarus etc. It has 57 ocean going ports, 22 deep water, & 3000 rock quarries today.
