This is very TRUE!,if you just want a copy canister and straps these are about £30 or just under and available from Richard Underwood,Soldier of Fortune and Militaria net.(though might need respraying a dark olive,as the colour I've seen seems a bit light)John

Aha, funny you should mention them...
I actually ordered a canister from Richard Underwood today. But i'm not sure if it went through, it said it did but i checked my bank account online and it was the same as before. Either it didn't go through, or i'm extreamly lucky and have ordered the item without the payment actually going through!
      Most likely the former though.
As far as the aspestos goes, wow. I didn't know that. What is it even doing in the gas mask anyway? It's like ironic how it's supposed to protect you from posion and it actually makes you die.

Thats because they did not know it was dangerous, asbestos was fire retardent,a wonder fabric, fireman had suits made of it,buildings were lined with it.A friend of mine worked in the Chatham dockyard and he remembers stripping it out of ships,no protective clothing he said "we were covered in it,white from head to foot".

            Hi Eric!

            Check out this one: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=530425

The thread is on British gas masks (again), but there's reference on other countries' filters, including TR, too.

            Check this one, too: http://gasmasksrule.webs.com/asbestosingasmasks.htm

These are not scientific reference, of course, but some knowledgeable collectors have commented there. It seems quite logical to me that Germany, TR and others would use asbestos, that was the leading technology at the time and it was no secret...

            Best regards,
            Giorgos

I started doing WWII reenacting in 1986 when everything was either original or handmade leather items. Some Bundeswehr items were made to work, like water bottles and early mess kits. The jackboots could be altered to appear pretty close. The West German gas mask canisters were covered with canvas that had to be stripped off.
I remember seeing a lot of original tunics that were stripped of insignia and fake SS insignia applied. I saw a lot of original stuff torn up. There is no excuse for it today with nearly the entire kit being available in reproduction.
