    Walter Nowotny

Last week i visited Austrias capital Wien and visited the famous "central cementery", a wonderful place of history. Besides thousands of inhabitants of Wien many celebrities, aristocrats from the empire, actors, artists, soldiers and many more are buried. There are wonderful graveyards of soldiers and a very nice and old jewish cementery. That cementery is so big that even some deers live in it. The superb gravestones and memorials remind of a really great history of that country.

I also came across the place where Luftwaffe-ace Walter Novotny is buried.
That soldier got a "honour grave" after his death in 1944 but in 2003 that status was withdrawn. Now even the gravestone was removed and only a few flowers remind of that man who didnt survive his 24th birthday.

Its a pity how my country - Austria - copes with its own history between 1938 and 1945. To give his own life for his country is the most expensive contribution one can give. Unfortunately Austria seems to make that dependent on the party one fought for.

I want to dedicate that post to all the young men of all nations who lost their life, health and youth in that senseless war.

The grave of Hess removed - ok, that has more than one explanation. But to remove the stone of Nowotny's grave.... Of course, that was passed by the usual "red & green" suspects.

Very sad and outrageous to dishonour a patriot who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Is it me or is the world getting more pc about ww2 as more time passes?

Didn't Stefan say that the headstone has now been removed now though?

Disgraceful to say the least. Where is the honour these days?

I can see what is happening though...in 100 years time there will be no physical traces left of the TR and then these PC countries can tell everybody it never even happened..

The Austrian government has always been hypocritical about it's Nazi past, portraying the country as a 'victim' of Nazi aggression in 1938. Complete rubbish. Who were all those millions cheering Hitler at the Heldenplatz in 1938 then?

in one simple word. 'Disgraceful'! He was a very brave man and deserves recognition for that, whichever side he fought on.

                  Regards,

                  Stuart

Does it mean that what was left of Nowotny after he crashed has been removed? No more living relatives?
I suppose that this pathetic government didn't like to see more flowers on Nowotny's grave than on John Morrison's in Paris.

                          Very good point.

Its good to remember this great luftwaffe ace. Too bad the austrians and germans have another opinion on thus wartime period nowadays.
