Project Riese - Secret underground Nazi complex

Today I visited the underground city of Osówka, one of the sites of Project Riese.

Riese (German for "giant") is the code name of the mining and construction project of Nazi Germany, started and unfinished in the Owl Mountains and Książ Castle in 1943-45. It consists of seven complexes of the underground military facilities located in Lower Silesia, previously Germany, now territory of Poland.

    [wikipedia]
The objective of the project was kept secret. Some claim it was to become a secret headquarter of Adolf Hitler. Others maintain that these were to become workshops for an underground armament factory, where a secret weapon was to be manufactured. Most of the work was performed by the prisoners of the Gross-Rosen concentration camp.

    [Osowka Tourist Site]
To my suprise it seems that not many people seem to know about Project Riese. The sites are mainly visited by Polish and Chech tourists during sumer season.

It came to my knowledge when some years ago i was watching an episode of "UFO Hunters" about "Die Glocke". Allegedlly, this Wunderwaffe was developed in the underground complex. Weither any of this is true, is up to anyone's imagination

For anyone interested in more information i recommend reading the Wikipedia page.

    Now, to the photos!

    Entrance board

A car near the entrance of the complex. If i understood correctly it has been used in a polish movie.

Entrance of the Osowka complex, at the foot of the Owl mountains.

    Inside

Unfortunately the guide spoke only Polish. My wife who is polish native translated some of it, but i has not become clear to me whats in this box..

    Left behind weaponry

The idea was to make smooth concrete tunnels. Here, the wooden foundation is visible. After the war most of the materials were removed by locals.

Ground dug helmets and weaponry (found in 2005)

One of the carts used by the workers. 13.000 worked at the project of which 5.000 lost their lives.

    The exit.

What is visible from the outside.

Hi Dylan, great pictures! I had no idea this place existed until now! What was the temperature in the tunnel complex like compared to outside? It looks a very interesting place to visit. Thanks for posting Regards Tobysauer.

        Hoi Marcel,

English tours can be arranged through the tourist office. They need to be notified 7 days prior.

Great thread and thanks for posting your photos? Do you have any other photos of around the area? A perspective of the terrain?

              Hi Ralph,

sorry - this is all i have to offer.

The only thing noticable is that the place is very remote and you need to follow a curly, narrow road to reach the place. Makes me wonder how all the big machines were supposed to get in there.
