    Hitler aware Berghof bombed

    Hi All..

Does any one know if Hitler was aware in the berlin bunker, that the Berghof was bombed on the 25th of April? I have not seen anything in writing or in film, indicating he knew and what his reaction was? Does anyone know?

    Thanks
    Charlie

By then I think he was more concerned with Russian Shells landing on top of his bunker in Berlin to really give a Rats Butt about the Berghoff.

I seriously doubt that anyone told him about it. As mentioned above, Berlin was totally surrounded, Russian artillery rounds were falling all over the place, the Russians were within a couple of kilometers from his bunker. I figure no one wanted to tell him as he couldn't do anything about it and it would probably only thrown him into another temper tantrum. He probably died not knowing, and not even worrying about it.

Since he found out via the news about Himmler´s backdoor discussions I think that he also was aware of the raid over the Obersalzberg.

Have in mind that he already sent Schaub there for destroying a lot of personal docs and the fact that the essential damage to the Berghof complex was not due to the allied bombing but caused by SS-troops setting the whole (damaged but surely not destroyed buildings) place on fire and somebody must have given the order for that.

There were five days between the air raid and his suicide - and these days appeared to be quite long.

I came across an article in the "
            atlantic" that staed the following:
"In April of 1945, just days before his suicide in Berlin, 359 Lancaster bombers devastated much of the Obersalzberg, flattening many of the buildings and seeding the area with unexploded ordnance. Although the Berghof suffered only slight damage (the kitchen and one wing were hit), Hitler ordered the retreating SS units to set the house ablaze. By the time the soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division arrived, the Berghof was a smoldering ruin."

My dad was 506 PIR and we used to have quite a number of pics he took at the Berghoff with a camera he acquired.

It was pretty much a wreck and full of debris.
Pics of him and buddies at the big windows-broken-drinking Adolph's
              Wine cellar contents.

Also had some taken at a camp they liberated.

He died in 1956, but was still very angry and bitter about that aspect.

                Hi Charlie
The RAF raid was on 25th April. Contrary to whats written in many books and I believe not even metioned in Band of Brothers the Free French were the first to reach the Obersalzberg area.
Tank crew of Iéna 2 being the first to enter the Berghof. Being polite Frenchmen they didn't take anything thinking the place may be booby trapped

                Crew of Iéna 2:
                Sergeant Gaston Eve, Tank Commander
                Philippe Bey-Rozet, Gunner
                Georges Dornois, Radio/Loader
Maurice Amzallag, re-allocated and replaced by Jean Brisse, Driver
                André Beaufils, Co-Driver/Machine Gunner

Yeah, I think Hitler ordered the place destroyed anyway, part of his "scorched earth" policy at the end of the war.
