Trip to Austria and Northern Italy - any good advices for museums?

    Dear forumites,

Soon I am off for a small trip to Innsbruck (Kaiserjägermuseum), maybe Berchtesgaden (Adlerhorst), and for the first time also in Italy (alto Trentino).

I know that there are a lot of WWI museum in Northern Italy, but the problem is that now it's still a bit early. I wanted only to know if someboby could recommend me the "must see", those museum or places that as WWI and WWII military history enthusiast must visit.

Thank you very much in advance for your comments!

    Ciao,

A little bit out of your way, but not terribly far, is a place called Bruck an der Großglocknerstraße - it is just South of Zell Am See, and is right on the main rail-line between Salzburg and Innsbruck. In Bruck, there is a castle called Fischhorn - you can't miss it, as the rail line passes it before coming to Bruck station. These links will tell you more about the castle, and the small role it played in the War:

If you attempt to make contact with the castle staff, and are lucky, you may get the opportunity to see the inside of the castle . . . but it is very difficult, as it is now a private residence. The current owners are kind, but very private, and do not like un-announced visits - so it is best to apply for permission long before you ever step foot on the grounds. If nothing else, you can walk the street that surrounds the castle, and take in the sights around town - Bruck is a cute town, with much charm, and a great place to stop for a beer at a place called Gasthof Zacherlbrau . . .

We were at Fischhorn last Fall, during a private "hunt" on the property - everyone else searched for wild game, while I searched for the Fegelein treasure . . . unfortunate for me, I was the only one that came back empty-handed . . .

To keep in Trentino on the Brenner Motorway you can stop in Rovereto ("Museo della Guerra, the biggest in Italy) and Trento (Museo degli Alpini - Italian Mountain Troops )
