ANZAC - Lest We Forget

Hello colleagues

I just wanted to honour a sacred day here in Australia ... and for our New Zealand members. ANZAC day is very special to both of our nations. On this day we remember all of our war dead ... and all of our living veterans ... and our current servicemen and women.

"At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them"

Here is a photo montage which pictures my grandfather (second from the right) and my three great uncles at the time of the First World War. Two of these great uncles did not return from France - my grand mother's brother, and my grandfather's brother (both wearing slouch hats in the pic). They are a long way from home ... but honoured ... and remembered.

We don't forget. And those of us lucky enough to remember the survivors of their generation will keep their living memory alive as long as we live.

With so much pettiness, selfishness, and lessons of history UNlearned these days, these honest men-- who asked for nothing and got even less-- DESERVE to be remembered for their steadfast principles, idealism, and selflessness.

A wonderful image that I have found myself coming back to several times. As a salute to Anzac day I watched Gallipoli and the Guns of August. Thanks for sharing the photo.

Anzac

I lived near Adelaide (1972-1980) during my childhood and remember the monuments of ANZAC in nearly every town, each all telling their own stories and they allways left me curious and wondering.

In 1998 I visited Northern France, a place called Pozieres 'the Windmill', it gave me a sort of reunited feeling, those monuments in Australia and the very dramatic event which happend here on this location.

Forums like this keeps them remembered.




The text reads, quote: "The ruin of Pozieres windmill which lies here was the centre of the struggle in this part of the Somme battlefield in july and august 1916 it was captured on august 4th by Australian troops who fell more thickly on this ridge than on any other battlefield of the war".

Thanks Deejay for the pics from Pozieres my great grandfather and his brother fought in northern france in WW1 unfortunatley his brother was killed and buried in the commonwealth war cemetery in pozieres,I am going to europe in september and hope to make a visit to this cemetery to pay my repects to him and all the other diggers.
