Rest in peace. My thoughts are for Ethel and the family at this sad time. An inspiration to many. An iconic American. He will be greatly missed.

From what I saw he was a humble man who never liked the label of "hero". He finally found peace after the terrible conflict he par-took in and lost so many friends. Now he has left us with memories of deeds and service that will ive on for many years to come.
RIP Richard you've down your country and famliy proud. You will be missed BUT never forgotten.

Decent man
I honestly believe Winter's generation of Americans, who were thrust into Europe and the Pacific theatres were the best. Many came from abject poverty when capitalism collapsed and only the war offered three square meals.
He came across a humble, decent and compassionate man, a true gentleman.
No doubt a lion in battle but in victory magnanimous. I have met several in my time none of whom veered into histrionics but pain was visible. Many British veterans also had this virtue, one who lives around the corner to me had a terrible time with the 12th SS Panzer in Normandy and still feels the pain.
May he feel the peace he deserves.

You
Watch the BOB episode "Why we fight" ...
I'm sure the Major saw at first hand why there was (and is) "Nothing to laugh about." with such reptiles.
