    WWII Sites on Oahu

Does anybody know if Bellows Field is accessible to the public? I know Wheeler/Hickham fields, Scholfield Barracks and Ford Island is off limits. Is the airfield at Bellows still intact? Not much info on web. Going to Oahu next month.

    Thanks in advance, Eric

Eric, I believe there was a sign that you could get in on the weekend or something. MY second trip there in July I was hoping to find a way into these airfields without going into an active base. Unfortunately I don't believe they are all accessible. Managed to take a few pics of the beach where one of the subs washed up on shore ... Bellows was just to the north of this site (as the pictures says 600m).

Suggest you NOT take any pictures of the entrance to the Marine Base at Kaneohe ..... shortly after this was taken, one of the finest with his hand on his weapon came cautiously up to my car suggesting I do NOT take pictures as this could be considered a Terrorist threat

I took some pics from a safer distance ...

Didn't need to be told more than once ....

          Eric,

The former Bellows Field (military part/airfield) is now part of a USMC training area that is not accessible to the public. There is a beach area that has some public access, depending on USMC training activities (where Darrell took his photos). http://www.aloha.com/~lifeguards/bellows.html

There is also a USAF recreation area; the public can't rent cabins there but when I was there in 2008 there weren't any gate guards during the day. There is a small monument at the main recreation area building that commemorates the capture of the mini sub and IJN Ensign Kazuo Sakamaki on Dec 8, 1941.

          Best,
          Greg

Thanks alot guys. I would like to see that beach where Sakamaki's sub beached near Bellows. Also hope to find Battery Pennsylvania. Guess I need to find a naval sponser to get into the base areas.

Thanks again for the great comments and pictures!

              Hey Eric,

If you find a way to get to Battery Pennsylvania, please let us know. When I tried to get there, it appeared that it's in a training area that you can't normally enter. With my military clearance I was going to ask Range Control, but ran out of time.

              Best,
              Greg
