    German version of 'Ancestry.com'?

I was wondering - is there a German version of this well known genealogical website? I want to research a soldier a bit more and something similar to 'ancestry' would be ideal - also are there German census?

So nobody in Germany does any ancestry/genealogy research online?

        Many thanks Simon,

I have actually found it already since my last post - I was just surprised by the lack of replies to a topic that I thought quite pertinent given the nature of the sub-forum

A lot of people in Germany are not too keen on finding out who their ancestors are (especially between 33-45)

I agree John, perhaps it might have got an answer quicker in the research forum..

Anyway, i use ancestry, the UK one, and have found a whole load of ancestors that served in the army, including 20 odd pages from the personnel file of some great, great uncle or something who served in South Africa in the late 19th century.

              Hello John, Gentlemen
When I first joined the Forum, a German member gave me a couple of links to try find info about a WW1 soldier. It was very difficult, in the end they wanted to know if I was a relative. I,ve since cleaned out my pm file, I,ll try to find the links but I think they are gone. I imagine its even harder regarding 33-45.

I,d like to add if I may these ancestor etc sites have a bad reputation for 'lumping' together files and are not accurate. Beware of sites asking for a fee for what in effect are public records.

you're right about public records but to digitalise and make them available online costs money. What's the alternative? spending a fortune in travel costs to visit the archives?

In my experience the innacuracies are down to mistakes in transcribing the records.

Some of the family history sites out there do charge a lot for relatively little, others though are very useful indeed.
