    Your Greatest Militarist?

We currently have a 'Greatest Irish Person' TV show on at present and we have everybody from General Michael Collins to James Connolly. I know this is subjective however who is your greatest militarist?

    Smiling Albert....

Hitler had no military understanding. He was a complete incompetent when it came to the military. He was a corporal for a reason.

Hand's down, I have to go with Old Boney, Bonaparte that is. A genuine scourge on the European landscape for many years.

Invading Russia shows what an incompetent leader Hitler was. His generals were responsible for the earlier successes in Europe, not Hitler. He just brought a great nation down to her knees.

Hitler? Come on... I feel sorry for you guys

My choice is Michiel de Ruyter.

Aha, de Ruyter was an interesting man. In terms of land mass conquered, it's hard to beat Alexander, but for sheer courage and tenacity I'm giving Frederick the Great a nod.

                          Your opinion, not fact.
The invasion of Russia was among the most smashing defeats any nation ever endured, loosing incalculable masses of men & material in the first few weeks.
Russia, and Russia only, was the one nation on earth that could absorb such a mortal blow by trading space for time.

Hitler later proved to be not quite even tempered enough to render competent judgments, true.
His major, and fatal, mistake was IMO having too many objectives too soon.
Had he put off the Crimea and went on the defense north and lunged and captured Moscow, that would have been a major turning point, and would have altered the course of the war.

Don't agree at all about your conclusions in the west either, since these are never ending arguments I'll go back on topic and nominate

Gen Chesty Puller : The most decorated U.S. Marine in history, great tactical fighter, led from the front. Semper Fi !
                          &
Admiral John Fisher : A more tenacious fighting spirit and grand naval strategist has, and will never be, known.

Well said, i have to agree. Even his exploits in WW1 have now been disputed so i hear

I also have to agree with JamesUS.

If Hitler had listened to his Generals during the Barbarossa campaign and not sent Guderians Panzer army south, and concentrated on attacking Moscow, Moscow and Stalins Russia would most likely have fallen. Stalin had already suffered a near nervous breakdown when the invasion had started and had totally ignored all information from his own staff that the invasion force were approaching Moscow.

Allowing the Russins time to build defences to Moscow and also allowing them to transport their highly experienced winter fighting troops from Siberia, in virtual secrecy, was a major mistake in my opinion,

I am so glad Hitler was so incompetent !!!!!
