Hi Sean, we had that happen here in NZ, a bunch of amatuer filmmakers were filming a robbery scene in a shop with the permission of the shop owner but failed to inform anyone else. As a result the armed offenders squad (swat) team turned up and scared the living heck out of the filmmakers. Best thing to do would be to talk to your local police and put something down in writing. Tell them where and when you will be filming, how many will be involved etc... If there are any houses nearby within distance of where you are filming then inform them as well. In addition if you can get a sandwitch board or some kind of sign to put up which says "filming in progress" or something like that, that would help too. Just cover all of your bases. The police may even want to to attend while you do it.

You could even consider adding the sound of the 'shots' using some kind of after-effects film editing program, if they have any problem with the shots in built up areas.

I agree contact your local police, also you should contact your local city/town municipal office, fire deptment, etc for any permits that may be required required. There may be by-laws prohibiting the discharge of firearms within town/city limits.
