Das Boot and U boat Pens & escape tower

Hey guys
About the escape tower /pool: yes that is correct its a big pool about 28 feet wide with portholes so you would be able to see the guys in exercise. The would flood it as you said. The men escaping wore no eye gear! just the nose pincher and breather aparatus. The water was heated to avoid a shock of sorts. In the real case scenario there was no such luxury! The tower 40 feet high, was open on the top where help crew stood by. Apparently they tapped a hammer on the side of the pool to let they guys know they were ok to come up. The tower is enclosed in a bunker and sits on three floors. It is the only escape/training bunker you can visit in the world. The French navy used it for many years after the war for training their submariners. A decompression chamber sits right next to the pool. Just incase....

About the movie Das Boot
I think they used the pens in La Palice/La Rochelle further south in the film. Smalller size.
