Who's Been to the Rapido River, Cassino?

I'm wondering where the exact crossing of the Rapido by the 141st and 143d Regts of the US 36th Division took place? There is a memorial near the bridge in the town of St Angelo but is that where the exact spot of the crossing took place? What a beautiful river and great view of Cassino! Also some large trout in the pools....wish I had my fishing pole! Want to go back..

When you are standing at the memorial, with the bridge to your left (and Monte Cassino to your half-left), and St. Angelo behind you, and look to the river, from that point app. 100m to your right (south, downstream) is the northern flank of the crossing. From here, app. 500m further down, is the southern.

      Also check this great thread:

      http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ht=gari&page=2

The fotos in post 4 show the area of the crossing in the background. And also check the aerial view, the crossing took place in the part of the river, where it "hits" the square wich marks St. Angelo, and the "U"-shaped riverbend.
