I have found Philadephia and LA to be much more frightening than DC. In DC the areas for the tourists are safe. I have been much more uncomfortable in Philadephia, LA. Chicago, New York, and DC appear safe in the tourist (that's me) areas.

I ALWAYS wind up in the sorriest part of a city the first time I go there.
      Beginners luck I guess.

        Dear Grovb,

I live about 30 miles from DC and know the city pretty well. DC is just like any other big city, the traffic sucks but there are many nice things to visit.

To add to the things that other peope listed:

The Air and Space Museum openend a new annex near Dulles Airport. has many of the German experimental rockets etc. $12 to park but the museum is free.

You will need tickets in advance for the Holocaust museum.

The Dunbar house has an exhibit on Viet Nam POWs. This is schedulked to close out soon though.

If you like Art the Smithsonian has almost 20 plus museums in its complex many art museums. (Corocoran Gallery, Freer Gallery, American Portrait gallery etc)

FDR Memoorial/Lincoln Memorial/Viet Nam are all in a triangle area and off a metro stop.

Go to the Pentagon fopr a tour.

Phillips Art gallery, a very large and at one time private art collection.

You can e-mail me if you need more suggestions. One of my last military assignments in the Army was on the Sec Defs and CJCS personal staff and I used to set up tours for foreign dignitaries coming to DC.
