    Zeppelinfeld....Nurnberg .

    Hi guys,

Another area i visited thru Germany whilst on my battlefield trip was Nurnburg wear a large number of Nazi Rally events took place thru the 1930's.

Here are some pics i had taken with a now and then theme, some of the period pics had been taken before completion of stands, hope you enjoy.
Also there is a documentaion centre/museum close by the field..walking distance.

    Zeppelin Field
The Zeppelin Field (in German: Zeppelinfeld) is located east of the Great Road. It consists of a large grandstand (Zeppelinhaupttribüne) with a width of 360 meters (400 yards) and a smaller stand. It was one of Albert Speer's first works for the Nazi party and was based upon the Pergamon Altar. In the 1970s, the pillars were removed for safety reasons. Years of neglect had taken their toll. The rest of the stand is intact and used as the centerpiece of the Norisring motor racing track.
From 1947 to 1995 the Nurnberg American High School, a DoDDS facility, used the field (called 'Soldiers Field') for high school football and soccer.

The grandstand is famous as the building that had the swastika blown from atop it in 1945, after Germany's fall in World War II.

                        Great stuff

Can you climb up on the bleachers? It would seem to me there would be alot of tourists standing in awe at such a well known site, is that true? More pics please.. Chris

Yes you can walk up the steps and you can basically stand were hitler gave many speaches in the 30's on that podium.

Today it is a very run down place and it seems no maintenance has been carried out in years.

In the summer of 1984 when I was a young Private stationed in Germany a bunch of us took the train to Nuernberg for the "Monsters of Rock" concert being held a few hundred meters away in the modern stadium.

Being all we had was our concert tickets, rucksacks, beer and no money and nowhere to stay I ended up spending the night up on that podium. Not for any other reason than it was the only place to get away from the many thousands of people partying all night in the field below and the Dutzendteich area. The bleachers were not there then and as I recall it pretty much looked like it did shortly after the allied demolition activities.

At that time no one really cared about the historical aspects of Zeppelinfeld, particular us who were more interested in beer and all of the girls running around.

Just thought I would throw my Zeppelinfeld experience in. Since then I have driven by many times, but never got out and walked around. Maybe I will next time I am in Nuernberg.

WOW, thank you for sharring those wonderful pictures of then and now of the Zeppelin field, this is my favorites Albert Speer building desings on the rally grounds, now here is my "study scale model" of the building, I did this about 17 years ago as a test study to build it in 1/35 scale.....and of course never did!!! This model have been in a box for almost 16 years, it was never finished or fully painted, it show it's age and several parts are broken.missing or warped, it have gonne to the trashcan about tree times...but some how I always save it from it at the last moment...mmm, may be sentimental value......but his time for final "model demolition" is close
