    The Somme/Yrpes Battlefield

Who watched the documentary on the Somme and the archeaological digging of the WW1 trenches at Yrepes on the Military channel last night? Facinating! I'm not a WW1 expert and I didn't know that the greatest loss of life for one day was by the Brits at the Somme! Unbelievable....Would love to visit the area some day.

Yes...Quite amazing mate...60,000 casualties in the first day of the battle (more than the number of US servicemen killed in the entire Vietnam War - oops, Police Action)...Most of the casualties were also and even more amazingly in the first half of that first day....This was because the soldiers advancing in waves were ordered not to run but walk to the enemy trenches through no man's land, as the High Command believed that the preparatory artillery bombardment would destroy and kill most of the enemy in their trenches, therefore no fire and movement, even worse no walking barrages and certainly no "danger close" fire missions...The only successes on the first day of the battle, which lasted nearly 4 months incidentally, were achieved by units which disregarded the order to walk and ran to the enemy trench systems while attacking near Thievpal, and a formation that attacked near the Schwaben redoubt while advancing under the cover of the guns.

Not sure if I've seen that show but have seen quite a number on it, and read quite some excellent books on the subject and WWI as well...I've also been to the area and walked the battlefields and cemeteries. The area is well worth the visit and the town of Ypres is absolutely beautiful, and was completely restored to its former glory after being raised in the war! Put it on your list of places to go IMO a good trip.
        Cheers, Steve
