    best battlefield in England ?

Hello, I am planning a first visit to England, and was wondering which would be the best preserved, most worthwhile battlefield to visit ? (of any era)
I will be based in London, so could only travel (train) within a day from London and back.

    Thanks kindly for any advice.

Naesby in Northamptonshire, battlefield site English Civil War, 14th June 1645, however though not in England my favorite is at Culloden in Scotland, not too far from Inverness, the site of the last major confrontation over the thrones of Britain, 16th April 1746. The battlefield there is just as it was and you walk though and round it with very good guidance, also the visitors center is superb. There are others, but these two I would recommend. Regards, Clive.

I agree with Clive on the above two, Naisby is excellent! and for a third although it has changed a little since the day it was fought, I would add the battlefield of Hastings right at the town on Battle in the SE of England...I enjoyed it, and the ruins of the church on senlac ridge where Harold fell, and the quaint old town too...Have fun wherever you end up mate!
      Cheers, Steve

Bosworth Field in Leicestershire is well signposted and has a good visitors centre though its some time since I visited. Site of Richard III's demise in 1485.

                  Hello,

Colchester is only 40 miles from London and has a lot of history dating back to Roman times.

More "recently" was the siege of Colchester during the English Civil War, we even have a restaurant here called the "Siege house" that still has Muskett ball holes in it's walls!

Another place worth visiting, although not a battle, is the Duxford air museum which again is only around 40-50 miles from London.

                  Hope you enjoy your trip,

                  All the best,

                  Mark.

Along these same lines, what the heck is the name of that Cruiser on the Thames River in London? A historical site; also HMS Victory?. Also, think there's some old B-17 airfields still intact but, if I went to England I would visit and dive some of those wrecks in Scapa Flow!

HMS Belfast Eric, certainly well worth a visit. There are so many places to visit, the Cabinet War Rooms in London are superb as well. During the war England was often thought of as one huge airfield, apart from many B17, B24, B26 Bases, 8th & 9th AAF Bomber and also Fighter stations, there are many of our own RAF, some with superb Museums as well. RAF Hendon is a very good example. Regards, Clive.
