And for December 18, 65 years ago the lead elements of Kampfgruppe Peiper attacked through the town of Stavelot during the Battle of the Bulge. This photo is just a small part of what happened on December 18, 1944, but it shows some idea of the terror and destruction caused to the civilians whose towns became battle areas. This Tiger II tank of schwere SS-Panzer Abteilung 501 rolled backwards and crashed into this house in Stavelot.

In the Ardennes, the Germans have reached the Stavelot and Houffalize areas but US forces hold their ground around Gouvy and St. Vith.

                            December 24, 1944 - Ardennes Offensive

Early in the morning SS-Ostubaf Peiper abandoned his vehicles and withdrew the remnant of his Kampfgruppe on foot, moving through woods and across rivers to rejoin the main body of the 1st SS Panzer Division. SS-Ostubaf von Westernhagen, commander of s. SS-Pz.Abt. 501, commented that the men looked like walking icicles as they reached the German lines on Christmas day.

Peiper's abandoned tanks littered the Belgian villages and fields along his route. The Americans examine King Tiger 204 left in La Gleize, in this photo from the Dr. Van Heeley Collection, courtesy Warren Watson of the 30th Division "Old Hickory" website.

                            Best,
                            Greg
