american indians in the Waffen SS : an internet legend or ...?

I've read with interest the thread opened by another italian member and after consulting with the moderator who closed the previous discussion, we agreed to reopen it . I should warn everybody that if this thread again will steer off the road into racist comments, it will be closed again, so please think twice before posting OT comments.

Actually i don't believe in this thing but the news spreaded over dozens of mainly italian websites and I managed to track down who I think was the originator, a journalist and historical researcher (the website was quoted by the previous member as well). I contacted him to ask about the sources where he got this very curious information and he replied quoting this book:

    J. Lee Ready, "The forgotten Axis, Germany's Partners & Foreign Volunteers in WW2", MacFarland & Co. Inc. , ISBN 0-89950-275-X

I tried to get a copy but it's out of print and I don't think I will spend $105 for just being curious.

Anyone has it? Is it reliable?

The information about this cavalry unit inside the Waffen SS made by american indians is only available on italian websites and I couldnt find it on german or american sites, and this is quite odd considering that the main source should be decrypted CIA documents,uh?

Please comment but remember the warning at the beginning of this post.

Thanks to have spoken with the moderator to open again this discussion () which, funny or not, it's quite interesting and IMO can give many opportunities to discuss about!

Yes agreed! I am skeptical with this thing, as I said, but a good topic to discuss indeed

This is a new one to me. Are you sure someone hasn't confused men from India with Native Americans?

If you made this a poll, I wouldn't even give it the credibility of an internet legend.

            utter rubbish.

In any case, if you're researching German units and formations, you don't rely on another countries intelligence reports which are 'best guesses'.

The vast majority, if not all Americans that served in the German armed forces were of German origin.
Collecting German award documents, other paperwork and photos relating to Norway and Finland.

Anyone has a copy of the mentioned book? I think what happen was the "avalanche" effect: someone quoted that book and regarded as a source and everyone else followed.

I just checked my local libraries catalog, they have a J Lee Ready book, but its
World War Two : nation by nation
Maybe others can check theirs and get lucky - Most libaries you can search their catalogs on line.

Some Indians that were supporters of the anti British movement fought in the German military, however it is unrealistic to assume that Native American 'indians' were in any position to travel to Europe to give aid to the Third Reich. It is possible that some historian was pointing out similarities between American Indians and the Cossack groups of the former CCCP. I know personally a couple of Native American reenactors that do WaffenSS impressions, but it is hardly the same thing.
