More than once, in speaking with US vets of the Bulge, they allege that the German, esp. SS troops were "hopped-up" on speed or uppers before combat...any truth to this or just the product of rumor and/or propaganda?

My understanding is that many front line troops were issued Benzedrine tablets.
This is an Amphetamine (also known as speed) and will certainly keep you awake and buzzing for extended periods.

I read somewhere that Pervitin (an amphetemine) was liberally distributed to German troops on all fronts. Something like 32 million tablets were shipped to the Luftwaffe and Wehrmacht as "stimulants," despite Pervitin being a restricted substance under German Law. The purpose was to "improve spirits" for soldiers that were combat fatigued or under a great deal of stress. Consumption was high especially among younger soldiers.
Only problem was that the drug had some bad after-affects. Although I guess in the Battle of the Bulge especially, those who were issued the drug before charging into combat were not expected to be around to experience the after-affects.Comment

British and Canadian troops were issued stimulants as well, Farley Mowat make reference to it in his book No Birds Sang. He writes how he struggled to swallow the pills with his parched throat and the shortage of water to help swallow them, And other times swallowing them with a good slug of issue rum.Comment

A Normandy fallschirmjager vet told me of his experiences taking issued pills and being up for days. Then he said after the period the drug wore off and just fell past out/asleep over his weapon.
I ask him how he felt those days why he was awake for days? The vet said he felt "fearless" and he raised his arms up like to show his muscles and said "strong".
A side note: When meth became popular drug a television show ran segment telling the history of meth originating in Germany during the 40s. The commentator referred to drug from the third reich as a "Nazi Crank".Comment

Tried it myself a few weeks ago. Couldn't sleep too well the day of, was moe active than normal, a bit hyper, went through the reenacment without a problem...then the buzz wore off and I wrecked my truck.Originally posted by pauke View Post

Was a good thing you hadn't eatten a whole tin of the original stuff which was alot stronger than what is sold today. You'd probably be bounceing off the wall from all the caffeen in the orginal Scho-ka-kolaComment
