I wrote Heinz Steinmeyer a letter last week and he sent me a nice letter in return thanking me, and telling me how much he loves Scotland and classes it as his second home,he even signed the photo i sent to him..
And he was very pleased to hear from a Scottish man, myself.

My Great uncle was also at comrie after surrendering in Normandy he was a radio operator in the 2nd SS panzer regt then 102nd SS spzabt. He married my Grandfathers sister after his release who he met whilst doing the outside farm labour jobs.
He was a wonderful man that told me all sorts of war stories (though not in graphic detail as I was only a kid at the time lol)
The thing that struck me most was when he told me he was never a real ardent nazi apparently he was regular army serving in the deutschland regiment when Hitler came to power & was told you will join the SS regiment (due to his skills & blond blue eyed look he said ) or you face a nastier surprise (I assumed later on he meant a trip to Spandau or Dachau as a Political prisoner)

It is though a great story from "heinz" & just go's to show not every SS soldier was a murdering maniac as so often portrayed

My wife does like shopping, and used to get a nice almost daily fix wandering thru central Edinburgh spending "our" cash

A day at a reservoir trout fishing gave me an interesting conversation with an elderly man who was formally in the RAF, anyways I told him I had a nice Luftwaffe collection and he turned the conversation around to a salmon angler he knew up north who worked in a POW camp during the war and had a "trunk" full of insignia.....

My wife was not happy 3 years of living in Comrie later (2004-2007) and she has just about caught up lost time spending "our" cash in Melbourne over the last 3 years.

Did get a very nice collection out of it, blew my budget for a while, but I also got a great friend (now past away) and shown some of the best Salmon spots in Scotland.

Actually my wife after a couple of months loved the place and still does, we get emails every week from Comrie.. I miss the food and my fishing.

And they insist on calling him a Nazi and all this....
